The success of your band will depend on the people within the band and their ability to get on with one another. So when forming the band you need to keep this at the forefront of your mind and ask yourself will these personalities get on in a team environment. After all that is what a band is, a team. If you don't get the band formula correct then you'll face problems down the line, probably ending up in someone leaving or the band totally splitting up. All band members need to gel from the outset.
You will need to decide what type of music that you will be playing and ensure that each band member is happy playing that particular style of music. This will avoid fallouts later on. Make sure that everyone’s role in the band is clear. Establish who will be playing which instrument and who will be responsible for making business decisions, getting gigs, and band promotion.
Once you have decided on your band members, it's time to get them all together for your first jam session. It is here that you'll observe each band members creative nuances, styles and their thought processes. These early jam sessions are where you should make any necessary changes to the band's composition. Differences of opinion are easier to sort out in these early sessions. You should allocate a certain amount of time for each band member to show off their solo skills and also give them time to express their thoughts to the rest of the band.
The band must know how to inter-communicate. Without communication the band will fail. Each band member needs to know how to communicate with every other band member so that they are able to agree on playing styles and in the general direction of the band. Do not even attempt to write your own material unless you are able to freely express and communicate ideas within your group / band.
In fact, it is generally advisable not to attempt writing your own material in the early days of your band. Instead, try getting each band member to write down 4 or 5 of their favourite cover songs. After, get each band member to vote on one song from each list. This way everyone gets to pick one song and everyone then is happy. Get your band to practice these cover songs ,over and over, until you feel you've nailed them. If you feel confident afterwards, then perhaps is the time to think about writing your own songs.
